Building a Culture That Survives Growth

The scrappy closeness of a small team is a feature, not a phase. Here's how to keep it.

When it's just a few of you, culture takes care of itself. Everyone knows what's going on, decisions happen over lunch, and standards are obvious because you're all in the same room. Then you grow — and suddenly the things that were simply understood have to be said out loud.

Culture doesn't scale by accident. Name the handful of values that actually describe how your best people work, then make them visible: in how you hire, how you praise, and how you handle the hard conversations. Values you only print on a wall poster aren't values — they're decoration.

The fastest way to erode a good culture is to tolerate behavior that contradicts it, especially from a top performer. What you permit, you promote.

Growth is a good problem to have. Protecting what made your team special while you grow is the real work — and it's worth doing on purpose.
